Today we remember the brave South Africans and PAC members who, at the call of Robert Sobukwe, gathered to protest Apartheid pass laws in the town of Sharpeville. A peaceful protest turned violent when police began to fire on the crowd, killing 69 people and injuring over 200. Many were shot in the back as they tried to flee. Photographer Ian Berry, working for Drum magazine, was the only photographer there that day and captured these photos of the terrifying moments.
